Amazon has officially announced the new-generation Kindle Paperwhite on September 3. The newly released device is an improved version of the older one. The device is now available for pre-order at Amazon.com and will be out starting September 30 in the United States. Surprisingly, the device is also available for pre-order to International customers including Australians. The device will be shipped internationally through Amazon Global Program beginning October 15, 2013. Here is the link to pre-order the new Kindle Paperwhite.
Do note, however, that it is only the non-3G model that is available for pre-order and that will be shipped internationally on October 15. The 3G model is not yet available for pre-order but you can opt-in to the email notification so that Amazon will notify you when orders will be accepted. The 3G model is expected to be shipped internationally on November 8, 2013.
The new Kindle Paperwhite will cost $139.00 for the non-3G model and $209 for the 3G model. Noticeably, the 3G model is more expensive by $10 than the older generation while the price for the non-3G model remains the same. These prices are for the non-ad supported versions.
Shipping to Australia would cost you additional $11.98 for Expedited Shipping (5-12 days) or $20.98 for Priority Courier Shipping (3-5 days).
What’s New with the Second-Generation Kindle Paperwhite
This latest Kindle Paperwhite is not really an entirely new e-reader but more of a refreshed version and a minor upgrade of the older one. Here are the list of the new features of the second-generation Kindle Paperwhite:
1. A Better Paperwhite Display
According to Amazon, this Kindle features a better screen that has a higher contrast and a better reflectivity. We also noticed a difference on how Amazon describes the screen of the older Kindle and this new one.
The old one was described as,
Amazon’s 6″ Paperwhite display with patented built-in light, 212 ppi, optimized font technology, 16-level gray scale
The new one, on the other hand, is described as,
Amazon’s 6″ Paperwhite display with exclusive Carta e-paper technology and next-generation built-in light, 212 ppi, optimized font technology, 16-level gray scale
With this new technology applied in the Paperwhite screen, white becomes whiter and black become blacker.
2. Faster Processor
Amazon claims that the new Paperwhite is powered by a 25% faster processor. Thus, page turns will become noticeable faster.
3. Better Touch-Responsiveness
The new Kindle is equipped with a new capacitative touch technology. The touch grids are tighter by 19% than the old model, making it more touch-responsive.
4. Software Updates
The new Kindle Paperwhite features “Page Flip” which enables users to flip through the book page-by-page or skim chapter-by-chapter. It can also preview other pages in the book without leaving the current page. This software update is illustrated below.
SMART LOOK UP
The built-in dictionary of the Kindle is also improved. Now, the device has a feature called “Smart Look Up”. With this update, you can look for the definitions of words without leaving the current page. This is similar to the built-in dictionary of iOS devices where you just have to select a word, then a “Copy or Define” option will appear, and by selecting “Define” a balloon will appear with the definition of the word.
Words that you looked up using the built-in dictionary are automatically added to the Vocabulary Builder that you can view at any time. This feature aims to enhance readers’ vocabulary and help them in retaining in their minds the definitions of these words. Using this update, you can also take a quiz about these vocabulary keywords.
5. It’s Lighter.
The old 3G model weighs 7.8 ounces (222 grams). While the new Kindle Paperwhite 3G weighs only 7.6 ounces (215 grams). The dimensions for both generation are untouched. For the non-3G model, the old one weigh 7.5 ounces (213 grams) while the new one weighs 7.3 ounces (206 grams)
